Binhan Wang: Adaptable 12L Plus

Binhan Wang from Ningbo, China: “I am an architectural student graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2017 and am currently working in an architecture practice in London, UK. I believe that architects need to empower and facilitate people to create their own stories in the city.

My work drives primarily from my interest in addressing a series of urban conflicts through large projects and creating strong geometric forms in small-scale projects. In my projects, I intended to address a strong urban conflict between fixed housing structures and dynamic populations by designing an adaptable social housing.

Besides working on projects in university, I have been actively participated in different live projects and design competitions and am keen to engage in more in the years to come.”

Project Description: In this housing project, I intended to address a strong urban conflict between fixed housing structures and dynamic populations by designing an adaptable social housing. During the site visit, I have interviewed the residents living on my site and found that the majority of them are migrant workers. As their population flow is very dynamic, they would require more flexible spaces to satisfy their changing needs. Initially, I did a lot of researches and analysed several precedents on adaptable housings. Then I set up my design system by using an ‘L’ shape single unit as a basic element to further develop my floor plan. Each unit transformations and combinations are based on the changing population.

For example, one ‘L’ shape unit is for a single person, and when the occupancy changes to two people, the unit will have different possibilities of combinations of two ‘L’ shape units and there are some shared spaces in each unit too. Fundamentally, the density of units on each floor is under constant changes in response to the users' dynamic needs which is based on the dynamic population, especially for young people who are at the marriageable age and middle age migrant workers who have no stable jobs. They had, therefore, become my target group of the design.
